Insights into our Diploma Courses

This course is one designed basically to give Muslims from all walks of life a backing or foundation to empower them to do Da’wah.

Qadar is a very sensitive topic. It is the sixth pillar of faith, and many people have gone astray regarding it. Some have denied it altogether while others have gone to such extremes in affirming it that they end up denying human free will. The truth as elucidated in Islamic teachings is between these two extremes.

The main goal of this course is to give students a reliable introduction to the fundamental concepts which form the foundations of the main fields of Islamic knowledge: Aqeedah, Tafseer, Hadeeth and Fiqh.

It is important to understand Islaam from a cultural point of view because the basis of much of the current turmoil within Muslim countries and conflict with their neighbors can be attributed to cultural clashes.

Learn about most of the legal issues related to the religious rite of fasting in Islaam.

The goal of this text is to provide a detailed basic foundation on the Science of Hadeeth. It builds on the material found in the Foundations of Islaamic Studies course available on this site.

Usool at-Tafseer (lit. The Fundamental Principles of Qur’aanic Interpretation), essentiallyrefers to the branches of knowledge which are necessary to provide an accurate interpretation of the Qur’aanic texts. Usool at-Tafseer addresses the actual step-by-step methodology of interpreting the Qur’aan to ensure that interpretations are not merely the result of human whims and fancies.

Although death is not a pleasant or popular topic of discussion, it is the most absolutely certain incident which every human being knows must happen in his or her life. Consequently, Islaam has provided a complete set of instructions for both the dying individual, as well as those who are present at the person’s death. These instructions should be common knowledge among Muslims, since death often comes when it is least expected. This course provides a concise and authentic compilation of the instructions regarding funeral rites in Islaam.

Commentaries on Soorahs al-Ikhlaas, al-Falaq and an-Naas were first prepared and presented to my students in the year 1991 in Riyadh and re-presented 15 years later in my Friday Tafseer class at the Qatar Guest Center, Doha, Qatar, in the three months between November 2006 and January 2007. However, like my commentaries on previously published chapters like Soorah al-Kahf, Yaaseen, al-Mulk, al-Burooj, and al-Hujuraat this commentary is a greatly expanded version of the original one which was based mainly on Tafseer Ibn Katheer. This Tafseer contains a far greater depth of understanding due to the number of other classical and contemporary commentaries used like al-Qurtubee’s al-Jaami‘ li Ahkaam al-Qur’aan, Ibn al-Qayyim’s Compilations, ash-Shawkaanee’s Fat’h al-Qadeer, ash-Shanqeetee’s Adwaa ul-Bayaan, as-Sa‘dee’s Tayseer al-Kareem ar-Rahmaan, and Al ‘Uthaymeen’s Tafseer al-Qur’aan al-Kareem. It also contains further reflection on the verses based on my personal experience and exposure to knowledge during the intervening years.

The collection of Forty Hadith by Imam Nawawi comprise the main essential and fundamental concepts of Islam which, in turn, construct the minimum level of required revealed knowledge for every single Muslim. Since having good knowledge of the various fundamental aspects of the religion is key to a Muslim's practice and application of Islam, this course attempts to provide simple and practical commentaries to the collection of Imam Nawawi's Forty Hadith.

The Fiqh Of Marriage course (FM) is a course delivered by Dr. Aboo Ameenah Bilal Philips, based on the Marriage Series by Dr. Muhammad al - Jibaaly. The main goal of this course is to understand what Islaam says about Marriage and the Rules and Regulations related to it.

An explanation of Hadeeth on Ramadaan and Fasting

There are some deeds in Islam which Muslims are prohibited to perform unless they are in a state of purity, due to the greatness and the loftiness of these deeds. The purpose of this course is to teach the Fiqh of purification (Tahaarah) in the light of the Qur’aan and the authentic Sunnah of the Noble Prophet (May Blessings of Allah and Peace be upon him).

A Muslim must know the details of the rulings on Zakaah, its conditions, those required to pay it, those for whom it is to be paid, and the properties from which it is to be paid. This is because Zakaah is one of the pillars of Islam. Zakaah is the major economic means for establishing social justice and leading the Muslim society towards prosperity and security. The purpose of this course is to teach the Fiqh of Zakaah in the light of the Qur’aan and the authentic Sunnah of the Noble Prophet (May Blessings of Allah and Peace be upon him).

Salaah (Prayer) performed genuinely with humility and submission to Allah (subhanahu wa ta'ala) has unlimited virtues and benefits. It is the noblest expression of faith and the surest way of thanking Allah (subhanahuwa ta'ala) for His unlimited favors. It is the way to obtaining Allah's mercy, generosity, kindness, blessings and a sure way to paradise. Allah (subhanahuwa ta'ala) says in the Noble Qur'aan: “Prosperous indeed are the believers who are humble in their prayers” [Soorah Al-Mu'minun 23:1-2] Unfortunately, today many Muslims offer Salaah in a careless manner following their own whims and desires. This is why most of our Salaah offerings remain deprived of the gleams and blessings of Sunnah. The Fiqh of Salaah course is divided into three parts and its purpose is to teach the Fiqh of Salaah in the light of the Qur’aan and the authentic Sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon him). This is the first part of the Fiqh of Salaah course teaching some very important matters related to the prayers.

Allaah has made Prayer compulsory on his slaves and ordered them to establish it and perform it well. The Prayer was one of the most important things which the Prophet (peace be upon him) explained to the people, verbally and practically, even praying on the pulpit once - standing, bowing and prostrating, and then saying to them, “I have done this so that you may follow me and learn my prayer.” [Bukhaaree & Muslim]

This is the second part of the Fiqh of Salaah course teaching the Description of the Prophet’s Prayer.

The renowned book is in need of no introduction as Allaah has granted it acceptance amongst His creation. It is a book authored on clarifying the reality of Monotheism and the different types of polytheistic beliefs and practices, the author suffices himself to mentioning the relevant Ayaat, Ahaadeeth and statements of the Salaf under each chapter and then mentions the benefits derived from them. The purpose of this course is to explain this famous book in an easy and simple way so that Muslims from every walk of life can understand the correct Islamic ‘Aqeedah, and can save themselves, their family and friends from the Fire of Hell.

Contemporary Issues is a course that is designed specifically for Da’wah purposes to non Muslims as well as Muslims. The issues presented in this course are those that are oft mentioned and confrontational; those issues which may be labeled as “controversial” in our times.

Hajj is one of the best forms of worship and is one of the most sublime deeds because it is one of the pillars of Islam that Allah sent Muhammad (peace be upon him) with. Anybody declaring to be a Muslim must fulfill this ritual act, or at least have the intention to do so once in their lifetime. The purpose of this course is to teach the Fiqh of Hajj in the light of the Qur’aan and the authentic Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him).

The Nullifiers of Islam – like many of the writings of al-Imaam Muhammad Ibn Abdul-Wahhaab (rahimahu-llah) – though small in size, is great in benefit. It’s subject is of the utmost importance to each and every Muslim: i.e. those matters, whether speech, action or beliefs, which cause someone to go out of the fold of Islam [after having entered it].

Usool-us-Sunnah (The Foundations of the Sunnah) is a brief essay which deals with the pure Islamic ‘Aqeedah (Creed) and correct Minhaaj (Methodology) of the early generations of the Muslim Ummah. The importance of this treatise is that it belongs to an honorable Imam, the revered Imam, the scholar, the teacher, the Reviver of the Sunnah, the Subduer of Innovation, Ahmad Ibn Muhammad Ibn Hanbal (may Allaah be pleased with him). Shaykh Abdur-Ra’uf Shakir explanation of this essay is primarily based upon the explanation of the Noble Shaykh Abdullah ibn Abdur-Rahman al-Jibreen.

Seeking knowledge is an obligatory part of our religion, and especially knowledge of Tawheed and Eeman, which is the foundation of our deen.

Our need is to learn the major aspects of Aqeedah in a simplistic and systematic way, for which this course is based on the exemplary book, “Aqeedah at-Tawheed” by Al-Allamah Ash-Shaykh Saalih bin Fawzaan al-Fawzaan (hafidhahullah).

This course covers all the essential principles of Aqeedah that a Muslim is required to know and practice - from the categories of Tawheed to what negates and defies it, like Shirk, Kufr, Nifaq, Fisq, Riddah and Bidah.

The Noble Qur’aan is the last Divine Book which has been revealed by Allah for the guidance of mankind up to the Day of Resurrection. The reading of the Qur’aan, understanding of its meanings and interpretations is important and obligatory on all the followers of Islam.

There are many benefits to the knowledge of Uloomul Qur’aan. Once a person learns the essentials of his religion and what is required for him to know, the first knowledge he should turn his attention to is the knowledge of the Qur’aan and its sciences. As Allah says in the Qur’aan:

“This is a Book that we have send down to you, full of blessings, so that they may ponder over its verses, and that men of understanding may remember” [38:29]

The goal of the course is to teach the student the fundamentals of Qur’ānic Arabic and its grammar.  The comprehension and understanding of the Lofty language of Allah (Subhanahu wa Ta'ala) is the ultimate goal.   The only requirement is that the student should have basic Arabic reading skills (i.e. they should be able to read the Qur’ān).  There is little focus on conversational Arabic, which is left aside for later study.  Instead, there is a keen focus on the grammar and vocabulary of the Qur’ān.  The goal of reading comprehension of the Qur’ān (and ultimately listening comprehension) overshadows everything else relative to Arabic learning.
ARB 031, or Level 1 starts from analyzing the basic Arabic word, then word constructions, and then finally sentences.  Level 2 (ARB032) focuses on Verbs, Verbal Sentences, and the Verb families.  The course avoids technical Arabic grammar terminology when possible and clarifies challenging Grammar concepts in simplified and clear examples.  Lectures are filled with numerous  examples taken directly from the Qur’ān.  Altogether, the essentials of Qur’ānic language are taught in a  step-wise and methodical manner so that the student learn thoroughly, efficiently, and easily.
Altogether, the student who successfully completes Introduction to Qur’ānic Arabic, Levels 1 and 2 should gain the ability of basic Qur’ānic reading comprehension (with the help of a Dictionary).  Furthermore, the student should also be able to translate Ḥadīth and Classical Arabic literature at a basic level.  Nonetheless, these students should continue to learn and develop their Arabic skills and take a higher-level Intermediate Qur’ānic Arabic course.

The greatest of all leaders, Rasoolullaah (sallAllaahu 'alaihi wa sallam) is our example to emulate. But how many of us actually step up to follow his footsteps in bringing out the leader within us? Is it because we have a lack of appreciation of who and how he was as a leader?

This dynamic course will take you onto a journey in the life of the greatest leader to have set foot in the face of this earth, in sha Allaah. This course will shed light on perspectives of Rasoolullaah (sallAllaahu 'alaihi wa sallam)'s life that probably were never revealed to you. Bring that leader from within under the guidance of the life of the Messenger of Allaah, sallAllaahu 'alaihi wa sallam.

The Soul of Hajj” is a spiritual guide to Hajj where all the components that make up hajj are explained by Dr. Aboo Ameenah Bilal. The focus is on the spiritual aspect of the Hajj, as it is in understanding the inner aspects of Hajj that we can make a Hajj acceptable to Allaah.

The main goal of Hajj is to establish the remembrance of Allah in our hearts by having us go through a variety of different rites and rituals, constantly remembering Allah. We should be aware in all the various rites and rituals of the hajj what the individual character changing or modifying goals are. These are the sub goals which help us to achieve that remembrance wherein we are blessed with the purification from sin and ultimately paradise as the reward for the accepted hajj.

This course is an effort to awaken the Ummah from the state of ignorance and obsession with rituals while at the same time being unconscious of the goals of the rituals. It will keep us focused on the spirit of Hajj, give us a sense of humility by which we can truly worship Him as He alone deserves to be worshiped.

This course series focuses on teaching Essential Qur’ānic Arabic grammar alongside high-yield vocabulary from the Qur’ān.  Thus, this course is different from most Arabic courses since it focuses primarily on Qur’ānic Arabic, and teaches grammar through the Qur’ān.  And also for that reason, there is little focus on conversational Arabic.  The goal of reading comprehension of the Qur’ān (and ultimately listening comprehension) overshadows everything else relative to learning Arabic.  Altogether, there is a step-wise progression in teaching the student the fundamental aspects of Qur’ānic Grammar alongside Qur’ānic Vocabulary.  Each lesson comes with several examples directly taken from the Qur’ān.  Furthermore, at the end of each chapter, there are questions testing the student’s mastery of the material, most derived directly from the Qur’ān.

The prerequisite to this Level 2 Course was ARB031 which focused on teaching the grammar of Arabic words, word constructions, and Nominal (non-verbal) sentences.  This Level 2 Course focuses on Verbs and Verbal Sentences.  Altogether, the student who completes Introduction to Qur’ānic Arabic, Levels 1, 2, and 3 successfully should Insha Allah gain the ability of basic Qur’ānic reading comprehension (with the help of a Dictionary).  Furthermore, the student should also be able to translate Hadith and Classical Arabic literature at a basic level.  The Level 3 Course focuses primarily on the higher Verb families   [الفعل الثلاثي المزيد فيه].  We anticipate developing an Intermediate course following this course series insha Allah.
